The eye is aflame.
Cakkhuṃ bhikkhave ādittaṃ, The eye is aflame.
Rūpā ādittā, Forms are aflame.
Cakkhu vaññānaṃ ādittaṃ, Consciousness at the eye is aflame,
Cakkhu-samphasso āditto, Contact at the eye is aflame.
Yamp‘idaṃ cakkhu-samphassa-paccayā And whatever there is that arises in
Uppajjati vedayitaṃ, dependence on contact at the eye,
Sukkhaṃ vā dukkhaṃ vā adukkhaṃ- experience as pleasure, pain, or neither
Asukhaṃ vā, -pleasure-no-pain,
Tampi ādittaṃ. That too is aflame.
Kena ādittaṃ, Aflame with what?
Ādittaṃ rag‘agginā dos‘agginā Aflame with the fire of passion, the fire
Moh‘agginā, of aversion, a fire of delusion.
Ādittaṃ jātiya jarā-maranena, Aflame, I tell you, with birth, ageing, Sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi & death, with sorrows, lamentations,
Ādittanti vadāmi. Pain, distress, & despairs.
