2.A guide to the Recollection of the Dhamma

(Leader)
Handa mayaṃ dhammānussati-nayang   karōma sē :
ทำใหม่ที่ขาดไปตรงนี้

(All)
{ Svakkhāto} bhagavatā dhammo                       The Dhamma is well-expounded by
                                                                                                Blessed One,
Sanditthiko akāliko ehipassiko,                                        to  be seen here & now, timeless,
                                                                                                Inviting all to come & see,
Opanayiko paccattaṃ veditabbo viññūhīti.   Leading inward, to be seen by  the wise
                                                                                                For themselves.

Handa mayaṃ dhammābhigitiṃ karoma se. Now let us chant in celebration of
                                                                                                The Dhamma.
{All)
[Svākkhātatā] diguna-yōgavasena seyyō,    Superior, through having such virtues as
                                                                                                Being well-expounded,
Yō magga-pāka-pariyatti-vimokkha-bhedo,  Divided into Path & Fruit,,study &
                                                                                                Emancipation.
Dhammo kuloka-patanā tadadhāri-dhāri.                        The Dhamma protects those who hold to
                                                                                                It from falling into miserable world.
Vandām’ahaṃ tama-haraṃ                                     I revere that foremost Dhamma, the
Vara-dhamma-etaṃ.                                                   Destroyer of darkness.
Dhammo yo sabba-pāninaṃ                                   The Dhamma that for all beings is the
Saraṇaṃ khemam’uttamaṃ.                                  Secure, the highest refuge,
Dutiyānussatiṭṭhānaṃ vandā taṃ                                       The second theme for recollection:
Sirenahaṃ.                                                                       I revere it with my head.
Dhammassāhassami dāsō (dāsī) va                 I am the Dhamma’s servant, the
Dhammō mē sāmikissarō,                                       Dhamma is my sovereign master.
dhammo dukkhassa ghāta ca viddhātā ca     The dhamma is a destroyer of suffering
Hitassa me.                                                                     & a provider of welfare for me.
dhammassāhaṃ niyyadēmî                                    To the dhamma I dedicate this body
Sariranjîvitancidaṃ.                                                    & this life of mine.
Vamdantō’haṃ (andantī’haṃ) carissāmi                      I will fare with reverence for the
dhammassēva subōdhitaṃ.                                   dhamma’s goodness .
N’atthi mē saraṇaṃ aññaṃ,                                   I have no other refuge, the dhamma is my
dhammo mē saraṇaṃ varaṃ:                                                foremost refuge:
ētēna sacca-vajjēna ,                                                 By the speaking of this truth, may I grow
Vaddheyyaṃ satthu-sāsanē.                                 In the Teacher’s instruction.
Dhammaṃ mē vandamanēna(vandamanāya)               Through the power of the merit here
Yaṃ puññaṃ pasutaṃ idha,                                   produced by my reverence for the
Sabbē pi antarāyā mē,                                                              dhamma, may all my obstructions
Māhēsuṃ tassa tējasā.                                                            Cease to be.

(bow down and say)

Kāyena vācāya  va cētasāvā                                                Whatever bad kamma I have done
dhamme kukammaṃ pakataṃ mayā yaṃ,     to the dhamma by body, y speech, or
dhammo paṭigganhatu accayantaṃ,                  by mind, may the dhamma accept my
Kalantarē samvarituṃ va dhamme.                   Admission of it, So that in the future
                                                                                                I may show restraint toward the dhamma.

3. A guide to the Recollection of the Sanga.

(Leader )
Handa mayaṃ saṅghānussati-nayaṃ                               Now let us recite the guide to the recllection
karoma se:                                                                           of the Saṅgha :

(All)
[Supatipanno] bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho,      The Saṅgha of the Blessed One’s disciples
                                                                                                Who have practices well.
Uju-patipanno bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho,    the Saṅgha of the Blessed One’s disciples
                                                                                                Who have practiced straightforwardly,
Ñāya-paṭipanno bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho,                the Saṅgha of the Blessed One’s disciples
                                                                                                Who have practiced methodically,
Sāmīci-paṭipanno bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho,             the Saṅgha of the Blessed One’s disciples
                                                                                                Who have practiced masterfully,
Yadidaṃ cattāri purisa-yugāni aṭṭha                 i.e., the four pairs – the eight types – of Noble  
Purisa-puggalā,                                                                             One,
Esa bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho -                                          That is the Saṅgha of the Blessed One’s
                                                                                                Disciples-
Āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiṇeyyo                   worthy of gifts, worthy of hospitality, worthy
Añjali-karaṇīyo,                                                                          offerings, worthy of respect,
Anuttaraṃ puññakkhettaṃ lokassāti.                               The incomparable field of merit for the world.


Saṅghābhigīti    :    Hymn to the Saṅgha   : the celebration of the Saṅgha

(Leader )
Handa mayaṃ saṅghābhigītiṃ karoma se:   Now let us chant in celebration of the                                                                                                                         Saṅgha.
(All)
[Saddhammajo] supaṭipatti-guṇādiyutto,                       Born of the true Dhamma, endowed with
                                                                                                Such  virtues as good practice,
Yoṭṭhābbidho ariya-puggala-saṅgha-seṭṭho, The supreme Saṅgha formed of the eight
                                                                                                Types of Noble Ones.
Sīladidhamma-pavarāsaya-kāya-citto:                            Guided in body & mind by such principles
                                                                                                As moraity:
Vandām’ahaṃ tam-ariyāna-gaṇaṃ susuddhaṃ,         I revere that group of Noble Ones
                                                                                                Well-purified.
Saṅgho yo sabba-pāninaṃ saṇaṃ                      The Saṅgha that for all beings is the secure,
Khemam’uttamaṃ,                                                      the highest refuge,
Tatiyānussatiṭṭhānaṃ VandAmi taṃ sirenahaṃ,       The third theme for recollection: I revere it
                                                                                                With my head.
Saṅghassāhasmi dāso(dāsī) va                                           I am the Saṅgha’s servant, the Saṅgha is my
Saṅgho me sāmikissaro.                                         Sovereign master.
Saṅgho dukkhassa ghātā ca                                  The Saṅgha is a destroyer of suffering &
Vidhātā ca hitassa me.                                                             a provider of welfare for me.
Saṅghassāhaṃ niyyādemi                                      To the Saṅgha I dedicate this body & this
Sarīrañjīvitañcidaṃ.                                                   Life of mine.
Vandanto’haṃ (Vadantī’haṃ) carissāmi                         I will fare with reverence for the Saṅgha’s
Saṅghassopaṭipannataṃ,                                        good practice.
N’atthi me saraṅaṃ aññaṃ,                                    I have no other refuge, the Saṅgha is my
Saṅgho me saraṅaṃ varaṃ,                                   foremost refuge:
Etena sacca-vajjena,                                                 By speaking of this truth, may I grow in the
Vaḍḍheyyaṃ satthu-sāsane.                                 Teacher’s instruction.
Saṅghaṃ me vandamānena (vandamānaya)                Through the power of the merit here
Yaṃ puññaṃ pasutaṃ idha,                                   produced by my reverence for the Saṅgha,
Sabbe pi antarāyā me,                                                              may all my obstraction
Māhesuṃ tassa tejasā.                                                            Cease to be.

( bow down and say)

Kāyena vācā ya va cetasā vā,                                             Whatever bad kamma I have done to the
Saṅghe kukammaṃ pakataṃ mayā yaṃ,       Saṅgha by body, by speech, or by mind,
Saṅgho paṭiggaṇhatu accayantaṃ,                   may the Saṅgha accept my admission of
Kālantare saṃvarituṃ va saṅghe.                      It, so that in the future I may show restrant
                                                                                                Toward the Saṅgha.

5 ทำวัตรค่ำ     :    Evening Chanting

Arahaṃ sammā – shambuddho bhagavā.        The Blessed One is Worthy & Rightly
                                                                                                Self-awakened.
Buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ abhivādemi.                            I bow down before the Awakened,
                                                                                                Blessed One.
(Bow Down)

Svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo.                                           The Dhamma is well-expounded by the
                                                                                                Blessed One.
Dhammaṃ namassāmi.                                                             I pay homage to the Dhamma.
(Bow Down)

Supaṭipanno bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho.                       The Sangha of the Blessed One’ s
                                                                                                Disciples has practiced well.
Saṅghaṃ namāmi.                                                       I pay respect to the Sangha.
(Bow Down)

Invocation (by leader)

Yam-amha khō mayaṃ bhagavantaṃ                               We have gone for refuge to the Blessed
Saraṇaṃ gatā                                                                 One.
( uddissa pabbajitā) yō nō bhagavā satthā.  (have gone forth on account of)
                                                                                                Blessed One who is our Teacher
Yassa ca mayaṃ bhagavatō dhammaṃ                          and in whose Dhamma we delight.
Rōcēma.
Imēhi sakkārēhi taṃ                                                   with these offering  we worship most
Bhagavantaṃ sasadddhammaṃ                          highly that Blessed One together with the
Sasāvaka-saṅghaṃ abhîpūjayāma.                   True Dhamma & the Sangha of his
                                                                                                Disciples.
Handadāni mayantaṃ bhagavantaṃ                 Now let us chant the preliminary passage
Vācāya abhīgāyituṃ pubba-bhāga-                    in homage to the Blessed One, together
Namakārancēva buddhānussati-nayanca      with the guide to the recollection of
Karōma sē;                                                                       the Buddha.

[Namō tassa] bhagavatō arahatō samma-     Homage to the Blessed One, the Worhtly
Sambuddhassa.                                                            Self-awakened One.

1.guide to the Recollection of the Buddha.

[ Tam khō pana bhagavantaṃ ] evaṃ                               This fine report of the Blessed One’s
Kalyānō kittisaddhō abbhuggatō,                       reputation has spread for & wide:

Itipi sō bhagavā arahaṃ sammā-                        He is a Blessed One, a Worthy One,
Sambuddhō,                                                                   Rightly Self-awakened One,
Vijjācaranasampannō,                                                               consummate in knowledge & conduct
Sugatō,                                                                                           one who has gone away,
Lōkavidū,                                                                          knower of the cosmos,
Anuttarō pusisa-damma-sārathi                                          unexcelled trainer of those who can be
Satthā dēvamanussānaṃ buddhō bhagavāti.              Taught, teacher of human & divine
                                                                                                Beings; awakened; blessed.
Verses in Celebration of the Buddha

Handa mayaṃ buddhabhigitiṃ karōma sē:    Now let us chant in celebration of the
                                                                                                Buddha:
[All]
[Buddh’vārahanta] –varatadigunābhiyuttō,    The Buddha, endowed with such
                                                                                                Virtues as highest worthiness:
Suddhābhiññāna-karuṇāhi samāgatattō,                        In him, purity, supreme knowledge,
                                                                                                & compassion converge.
Bōdhēsi yō sujanataṃ kamalaṃ va sūrō,                       He awakens good people like the sun
                                                                                                Does the lutus.
Vandām’ahaṅ tam-araṇaṃ sirasā jinendaṃ. I revere with my head that Peaceful One,
                                                                                                The Conqueror Supreme.
Buddho yō sabba-pāninaṃ saraṇaṃ                 the Buddha who for all beings is the
Khemem-uttamaṃ,                                                      secure, the highest refuge,
Pathamānussaṭiṭṭhānaṃ vandāmi taṃ                            The first theme for recollection: I revere
Sirēnahaṃ,                                                                       him with my head.
Buddhassāhasmi dāsō(woman: dāsī) va                        I am the Buddha’s servant, the Buddha is
Buddhō me sāmikissarō.                                         My sovereign master.
Buddhō dukkhassa ghāta ca viddhātā ca                     The Buddha is a destroyer of suffering
Hitassa me.                                                                     & a provider of welfare for me.
Buddhassāhaṃ niyyādēmî                                     To the Buddha I dedicate this body

Handa mayaṃ taṅkhanika-paccavekkhana   Now let us recite the passage for
Pathaṃ bhanāma se                                                   reflection at the moment (of using
                                                                                                The requisites):
(All)

Patisaṅkhā yoniso civaraṃ parisevāmi                          Considering it thoughtfully, I use the
                                                                                                Robe,
Yāvadeva sitassa paṭighātāya,                                           Simply to counteract the cold,
Unhassa paṭighātāya,                                                                To counteract the heat,
Daṃsa-makasa-vātatapa-siriṃsapa-                                To counteract the touch of flies,
Samphassānaṃ paṭighātāya,                                                mosquitoes, wind, sun,& reptiles;
Yāvadeva hirikopina-paticchādan’atthaṃ.    Simply for the purpose of covering
                                                                                                The parts of the body that cause shame.
Patisaṅkhā yoniso pindapātaṃ patisevami, Considering it thoughtfully, I use food,
Neva davāya na madāya na maṇdanāya                       neither  playfully, nor for intoxication,
na vibhūsanāya,                                                            nor for putting on bulk, nor
                                                                                                for beautification,
Yāvadeva imassa kāyassa ṭhitiya                     But simply for the survival &
yapanāya vihiṃsuparatiyā                                      continuance of this body, for ending its
brahma-cariyānuggahāya,                                       afflictions, for the support of the holy life
Iti pūraṇañca vedanaṃ patihaṅkhāmi                               (Thinking,) Thus will I destroy old
Navanca vedanaṃ na uppādessāmi,                                feelings ( of hunger) and not create new
                                                                                                Feelings ( from overeating.)
Yātra ca me bhavissati anavajjatā                     I will maintain myself, be  blameless,
Ca phāsu-vihārocāti.                                                  & live in comfort.
Patisaṅkhā yoniso senāsanaṃ patisevāmi, Considering it thoughtfully, I use the
                                                                                                lodging.
Yāvadeva sītassa paṭighātāya,                                           Simply to counteract the cold,
Unhassa paṭighātāya,                                                                To counteract the heat,
Daṃsa-mākasa-vātatapa-siriṃsapa-                                To counteract the touch of flies, wind,
Samphassānaṃ paṭighātāya,                                                sun, & reptiles;
Yāvadeva utūparissaya-vinodanaṃ                  Simply for protection from the
Paṭisallānarām’atthaṃ.                                                            Inclemencies  of weather and for the
                                                                                                Enjoyment of seclusion.
Patisaṇkhā yoniso gilāna-paccaya-                  Considering them thoughtfully, I use
Bhesajja-parikkhāraṃ patisevāmi,                    medicinal requisites for  curing the sick,
Yāvadeva uppannānam veyyabādhikānaṃ   Simply to counteract any pains of illness
Vedanānaṃ paṭighātāya,                                         that have arisen,
Abyāpajjhā-paramatāyāti.                                       And for maximum freedom from disease.

3 อะภิณหปัจจเวกขณะปาฐะ : abhinhapaccevakkhaṇapātha:
Five Subjects for Frequent Recollection.

Handa mayaṃ abhiṇhapaccavekkhaṇa pāthaṃ bhaṇama se.
Let us now recite the passage for frequent recollection.

( All)
Jara dhammomhi jaraṃ anatīto                            I am subject to ageing. Ageing is unavoidable.
Byādhi-dhammomhi byadhiṃ anatīto                I am subject to illness. Illness is
                                                                                                Unavoidable.
Maraṇa-dhammomhi maraṇaṃ anatīto             I am subject to death. Death is
                                                                                                Unavoidable.
Sabbehi me piyehi manapehi nāna-bhavo      I will grow different, separate from all that
Vina-bhavo                                                                       is dear & appealing to me.
Kammassakomhi kamma-dāyādo                       I am the owner of my actions, heir to my
Kamma-yoni kamma-bandhu                                 actions, born of my actions, related
Kamma-paṭisraṇo                                                         through my actions, and live dependent
                                                                                                On my actions.
Yaṃ kammaṃ karissāmi                                          Whatever I do,
Kalyaṇaṃ vā pāpakaṃ vā                                       for good or for evil, to that
Tassa dāyādo bhavissāmi.                                     will fall heir
Evaṃ amhehi abhiṇhaṃ paccavekkhitabbaṃ.            We should often reflect on this.

4 ปัตติทานะคาถา  :  Sabbapattidanagatha : Verse for the Dedication of Merits toward all beings.

Puññassidāni katassa,                                                             May the merits made by me now or at
Yānaññāni katāni me,                                                                some other time, be shared
Tesañca bhāgino hontu,                                                           among all beings here infinite,
Sattānantappamānakā,                                                             immeasurable;
Ye piyā guṇavantā ca,                                                               those dear to me and virtuous as
Mayhaṃ mātāpitādayo,                                                             mother or as father are,
Diṭṭhā me capyadiṭṭhā vā,                                       the seen and the invisible,
Aññe majjhattaverino,                                                               to others neutral, hostile too;
Sattā iṭṭhanti lokasmiṃ,                                                           beings established in the world
Tebhūmmā catuyonikā,                                                             upon three spheres, four kinds  of birth,
Pañcekacatuvokārā,                                                   five, one, or four constutuents
Saṃsarantā bhavābhave,                                        wandering in realms small and great,
Ñātaṃ ye pattidānamme,                                         my merit-dedication here having
Anumodantu te sayaṃ,                                                             known may they rejoice,
Ye cimaṃ nappajānanti,                                                           and those who do not know of this
Devā tesaṃ nivedayuṃ,                                                           may deities announce to them,
Mayā dinnāna puññānaṃ,                                        By rejoicing in this cause, this gift of
Anumodanahetunā,                                                      merits (puñña) given by me,
Sabbe sattā sadā hontu,                                          may beings all forever live a happy
Averā sukhajīvino,                                                       live and free from hate, and may they
Khemappadanca pappontu,                                    find the Path Secure and their good
Tesāsā sijjataṃ subhāti.                                                         Wishes all succeed.
