4 สาราณิยธรรมสูตร   :  Sārāṇīya-dhamma Sutta [go up]:  Conditions for Amiability
Evam-me sutaṃ.                                                               I have heard that
Ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā,                                             on one occasion the Blessed One
 Sāvatthiyaṃ viharati,                                                      was staying near Savatthi in Jeta's
Jetavane Anāthapiṇḍikassa, ārāme.                           Grove, Anathapindika's monastery.
Tatra kho Bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi,                        There he said to the monk,
"Bhikkhavo" ti. Bhadante ti te bhikkhū                        "Monks!" "Yes, lord," the monks
Bhagavato paccassosuṃ.                                              responded.
Bhagavā etad-avoca:                                                       The Blessed One said:

"Chayime bhikkhave dhammā                                      "Monks, these six are conditions
sārāṇīyā piya-karaṇā garu-karaṇā,                               that are conducive to amiability,
saṅgahāya avivādāya sāmaggiyā                                that engender feelings of endearment,
ekī-bhāvāya saṃvattanti.                                                 engender feelings of respect, leading to a sense of fellowship, a lack of disputes, harmony, & a state of unity.

Katame cha?                                                                       Which six?
"Idha bhikkhave bhikkhuno,                                           [1] "There is the case
mettaṃ kāya-kammaṃ                                                    where a monk is set on bodily acts of good
paccupaṭṭhitaṃ hoti,                                                         will with regard to his fellows in the holy life,
sabrahmacārīsu āvi ceva raho ca.                                to their faces& behind their backs.
Ayampi dhammo sārāṇīyo                                               This is a condition that is conducive to
piya-karaṇo garu-karaṇo,                                                 amiability, that engenders feelings of
saṅgahāya avivādāya sāmaggiyā                                endearment, engenders feelings of respect,
ekī-bhāvāya saṃvattati.                                                  leading to a sense of fellowship,a lack of
disputes, harmony,& a state of unity.

"Puna c'aparaṃ bhikkhave bhikkhuno,                       [2] "Furthermore, the monk
mettaṃ vacī-kammaṃ                                                     is set on verbal acts of good will with regard
paccupaṭṭhitaṃ hoti,                                                         to his fellows in the holy life, to their faces
sabrahmacārīsu āvi ceva raho ca.                                 & behind their backs.This is a condition
Ayampi dhammo sārāṇīyo                                               that is conducive to amiability,that
piya-karaṇo garu-karaṇo,                                                  engenders feelings of endearment
saṅgahāya avivādāya sāmaggiyā                                , engenders feelings of respect, leading to a
ekī-bhāvāya saṃvattati.                                                  sense of fellowship, a lack of disputes,                                                                                                      harmony, & a state of unity.

"Puna c'aparaṃ bhikkhave bhikkhuno,                       [3] "Furthermore, the monk is
mettaṃ mano-kammaṃ                                  set on mental acts of good will
paccupaṭṭhitaṃ hoti,                                                         with regard to his fellows
sabrahmacārīsu āvi ceva raho ca.                                in the holy life, to their faces
Ayampi dhammo sārāṇīyo                                              & behind their backs.
piya-karaṇo garu-karaṇo,                                                 his is a condition that is
saṅgahāya avivādāya sāmaggiyā                                conducive to amiability,
ekī-bhāvāya saṃvattati.                                                  that engenders feelings
of endearment, engenders feelings
of respect, leading to a sense
of fellowship, a lack of disputes,
harmony, & a state of unity.

"Puna c'aparaṃ bhikkhave bhikkhu,                            [4] "Furthermore, whatever righteous
ye te lābhā dhammikā dhamma-laddhā,                     gains the monk may obtain
antamaso patta-pariyāpanna-mattampi,                     in a righteous way — even if only
tathārūpehi lābhehi appaṭivibhattabhogī hoti,            as much as the alms in his bowl
sīlavantehi sabrahmacārīhi sādhāraṇa-bhogī.           — he does not consume them alone.
Ayampi dhammo sārāṇīyo piya-karaṇo                       He consumes them after sharing them
garu-karaṇo,                                                                        in common with his virtuous fellows
saṅgahāya avivādāya sāmaggiyā                                in the holy life. This is a condition that
ekī-bhāvāya saṃvattati.                                                  is conducive to amiability, that engenders
feelings of endearment, engenders
feelings of respect, leading to a sense
of fellowship, a lack of disputes,
harmony, & a state of unity.

"Puna c'aparaṃ bhikkhave bhikkhu,                            [5] "Furthermore — with reference to the
yāni tāni sīlāni akhaṇḍāni achiddāni                             virtues that are untorn, unbroken,
asabalāni akammāsani,                                                   unspotted, unsplattered, liberating,
bhujissāni viññūpasatthāni                                             praised by the wise,
aparāmatthāni samadhi-saṃvattanikāni.   untarnished, leading to concentration
Tathārūpesu sīlesu                                                            — the monk dwells with his virtue
sīla-sāmaññagato viharati,                                              on a par with that of his fellows
sabrahmacārīhi āvi ceva raho ca.                                 in the holy life, to their faces
Ayampi dhammo sārāṇīyo                                              & behind their backs. This is a condition
piya-karaṇo garu-karaṇo,                                                 that is conducive to amiability, that
saṅgahāya avivādāya sāmaggiyā                                engenders feelings of endearment,
ekī-bhāvāya saṃvattati.                                                  engenders feelings of respect,
leading to a sense of fellowship,
a lack of disputes, harmony,
& a state of unity.

"Puna c'aparaṃ bhikkhave bhikkhu,                            [6] "Furthermore — with reference to
yāyaṃ diṭṭhi ariyā niyyānikā,                                          views that are noble, leading outward,
niyyāti takkarassa sammā-                                            lead those who act in accordance
dukkhakkhayāya,                                                              with them to the right ending
tathārūpāya diṭṭhiyā                                                          of suffering & stress — the monk dwells
diṭṭhi-sāmaññagato viharati,                                           with his views on a par with those of
sabrahmacārīhi āvi ceva raho ca.                                 his fellows in the holy life
Ayampi dhammo sārāṇīyo ,                                            to their faces & behind their backs.
piya-karaṇo garu-karaṇo,                                                 This is a condition that is conducive
saṅgahāya avivādāya sāmaggiyā                                to amiability, that engenders feelings
ekī-bhāvāya saṃvattati.                                                  of endearment, engenders feelings of
respect, leading to a sense of fellowship,
a lack of disputes, harmony, & a state of
unity.

"Ime kho bhikkhave cha dhammā                                 "These are the six conditionssārāṇīyā
piya-karaṇā garu-karaṇā,                                                 that are conducive to amiabilit
saṅgahāya avivādāya sāmaggiyā ,                              that engender feelings of endearment,
ekī-bhāvāya saṃvattantī" ti.                                           engender feelings of respect,
leading to a sense of fellowship,
a lack of disputes, harmony, & a state of unity."

Idam-avoca Bhagavā.                                                      That is what the Blessed One said.
Attamanā te bhikkhū                                                         Gratified, the monks delighted
Bhagavato bhāsitaṃ, abhinandunti.                             in the Blessed One's words.
