Bhikkhu-aparihāniya-dhamma Sutta [go up]Conditions for No Decline among the Monks

Evam-me sutaṃ.                                                               I have heard that on one occasion
Ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā,                                             the Blessed One was staying in Rajagaha,
Rājagahe viharati, Gijjhakūṭe Pabbate.                       on Vulture Peak Mountain.
Tatra kho Bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi,                        There he addressed the monks:
"Satta vo bhikkhave aparihāniye                   "Monks, I will teach you
dhamme desessāmi.                                                        the seven conditions that lead to no decline.
Taṃ suṇātha sādhukaṃ manasikarotha                     Listen & pay close attention.
bhāsissāmī" ti.                                                                    I will speak."
"Evam-bhante" ti kho te bhikkhū                                   "Yes, lord,"
Bhagavato paccassosuṃ.                                              the monks responded.
Bhagavā etad-avoca:                                                       The Blessed One said:
"Katame ca bhikkhave satta                                          "And which seven are the conditions
aparihāniyā dhammā?                                                      that lead to no decline?
"Yāvakīvañca bhikkave bhikkhū,                  [1] "As long as
abhiṇha-sannipātā bhavissanti                                     the monks meet often,
sannipāta-bahulā, ,                                                            meet a great deal,
vuḍḍhiyeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṃ                             their growth can be expected
pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni.                                                    not their decline.
"Yāvakīvañca bhikkave bhikkhū,                  [2] "As long as
samaggā sannipatissanti,                                               the monks meet in harmony,
samaggā vuṭṭhahissanti,                                                 adjourn from their meetings
samaggā saṅgha-karaṇīyāni karissanti,                     in harmony, and conduct Sangha business
vuḍḍhiyeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṃ                             in harmony, their growth can be expected,
pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni.                                                    not their decline.
"Yāvakīvañca bhikkave bhikkhū,                  [3] "As long as
apaññattaṃ na paññapessanti,                                     the monks neither decree
paññattaṃ na samucchindissanti.                                what has been undecreed nor repeal
Yathā-paññattesu sikkhāpadesu                  what has been decreed, but practice
samādāya vattissanti,                                                      undertaking the training rules as they have
vuḍḍhiyeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṃ                             been decreed, their growth can be expected,
pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni.                                                    not their decline.
"Yāvakīvañca bhikkave bhikkhū,                  [4] "As long as
ye te bhikkhū therā rattaññū cira-pabbajitā,               the monks honor, respect, venerate,
saṅgha-pitaro saṅgha-pariṇāyakā,                               & do homage to the elder monks
te sakkarissanti garukarissanti                                      — those with seniority who have long
mānessanti pūjessanti tesañca sotabbaṃ                 been ordained, the fathers of the Sangha,
maññissanti,                                                                       leaders of the Sangha — regarding them
vuḍḍhiyeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṃ                             as worth listening to, their growth can be
pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni.                                                    expected, not their decline.
"Yāvakīvañca bhikkave bhikkhū,                  [5] "As long as the monks do not submit to
uppannāya taṇhāya ponobbhavikāya                          the power of any arisen craving
no vasaṃ gacchissanti,                                                   that leads to further becoming,
vuḍḍhiyeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṃ                             their growth can be expected,
pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni.                                                    not their decline.
"Yāvakīvañca bhikkave bhikkhū,                  [6] "As long as
āraññakesu senāsanesu                                                 the monks see their own benefit
sāpekkhā bhavissanti,                                                     in wilderness dwellings,
vuḍḍhiyeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṃ                             their growth can be expected,
pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni.                                                    not their decline.
"Yāvakīvañca bhikkave bhikkhū,                  [7] "As long as
paccattaññeva satiṃ upaṭṭhapessanti,                       the monks each keep firmly in mind:
'Kinti anāgatā ca pesalā                                   'If there are any well-behaved
sabrahmacārī āgaccheyyuṃ.                                         fellow-followers of the holy life
Āgatā ca pesalā sabrahmacārī phāsu                          who have yet to come, may they come;
vihareyyunti,'                                                                      and may the well-behaved
vuḍḍhiyeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṃ                             fellow-followers of the holy life
pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni.                                                    who have come live in comfort,'
their growth can be expected,
not their decline.
"Yāvakīvañca bhikkave ime                                           "As long as the monks remain
satta aparihāniyā dhammā                                              steadfast in these seven conditions,
bhikkhūsu ṭhassanti,                                                        and as long as
imesu ca sattasu aparihāniyesu                                     these seven conditions
dhammesu bhikkhū sandississanti,                             endure among the monks,
vuḍḍhiyeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṃ                             the monks' growth can be expected,
pāṭikaṅkhā no parihānī" ti.                                               not their decline."
Idam-avoca Bhagavā.                                                      That is what the Blessed One said.
Attamanā te bhikkhū                                                         Gratified, the monks delighted
Bhagavato bhāsitaṃ, abhinandunti.                             in the Blessed One's words.

Ended.
