โพชฌงค์ 7  : Bojjhaṅśpabbaṃ  :   The seven Factors of Enlightenment.

Puna ca paraṃ, bhikkhave,bhikkhu                             And again, Monks, a monk dwells
Dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati,                         contemplating the mental-object in the mental-objects of the
Sattasu bojjhaṅgesu.                                                        Seven  Factors of Englishtenment.
                               
Kathañca pana, bhikkhave, bhikkhu                            And,Monks, how does a monk dwell
Dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati                          contemplating the mental-object in the
Sattasu bojjhaṅgesu?                                                       mental-Objects of the seven Factors of Enlightenment?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu                                                Here, Monks,
1 Santaṃ vā ajjhattaṃ satisambojjhaṅgaṃ               when the enlightenment-factor of mindfulness
‘Atthi me ajjhattaṃ satisambojjhaṅgo’ ti                     is present in him,the monk knows,’there is
Pajānāti.                                                                               the enlightenment-factor of mindfulness in me,
Asantaṃ vā ajjhattaṃ satisambojjhaṅgaṃ                or when the enlightenment-factor of
‘Natthi me ajjhattaṃ satisambojjhaṅgo’ti                    mindfulness is absent in him, he knows,’
Pajānāti;                                                                               There is no enlightenment-factor of mindfulness in me,’
Yathā ca  anuppannassa                                                 He also knows the reason why the arising of
satisambojjhaṅgassa uppado hoti                                the non-arisen enlightenment-factor of
tañca pajānāti;                                                                    mindfulness comes to be;
yathā ca uppannassa                                                       he also knows the reason why the perfection 
satisamobjjhaṅgassa  bhāvanāya                                through cultivation of the enlightenment- pāripūri hoti tañca pajānāti.                                                factor Of mindfulness comes to be.

2 Santaṃ vā  ajjhattaṃ                                                    When the enlightenment-factor of the
Dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgaṃ                                    investigation of reality ( of mental-physical
Atthi me ajjhattaṃ                                                             phenomena ( nāmarūpa,) as presented by
dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgo’ti pajānāti,                   mindfulness to the meditator’s mind) is
present in him,the monk knows,’there is the
enlightenment-factor of the investigation of
reality in me’,
asantaṃ vā ajjhattaṃ                                                       or when the enlightenment-factor of the
dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgaṃ                                   investigation of reality is absent in him,
natthi me ajjhattaṃ                                                            he knows,’ There is no enlightenment-factor
dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgo’ti pajanati                     of the investigation of reality in me.’
yathā ca  anupannassa                                                    He also knows the reason why the arising of
dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgassa                 the non-arisen enlightenment-factor of the
uppado hoti tañca pajānāti,                                             investigation of  reality comes to be;
yathā ca uppannassa                                                       he also knows the reason why the perfection
dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgass                                   through cultivation of the enlightenment-
bhāvanāya pāripūri hoti                                                    factor of the investigation of reality
tañca pajānāti.                                                                    comes to be.

3 Santaṃ vā ajjhattaṃ                                                     When the enlightenment-factor of energy is
viriyasambojjhaṅgaṃ                                                       present in him, the monk knows,
‘Atthi me ajjhattaṃ                                                            ’there is the enlightenment-factor
Viriyasambojjhaṅgo’ti pajanati,                                      of energy in me’,
Asantaṃ vā  ajjhattaṃ                                                     or when the enlightenment-factor of energy Viriyasambojjhaṅgaṃ                                                     is absent in him, he knows,’ there is no
‘notthi me ajjhattaṃ                                                           enlightenment-factor
Viriyasamobjjhaṅgo’ti pajānati,                                      of energy in me’.
Yathā ca anuppannassa                                                  He also knows the reason why the arising of
Viriyasambojjhaṅgassa uppado hoti                            the non-arisen enlightenment-factor of
Tañca pajānāti,                                                                   energy comes to be;
Yathā ca uppannassa                                                       he also knows the reason why the perfection
Viriyasambojjhaṅgassa bhāvana                  through cultivation of the enlightenment-
Pāripūri hoti tañca pajanāti.                                            factor Of energy comes to be.

4. Santaṃ va ajjhattaṃ                                                    When the lelightenment-factor of rapture is
Pītisambojjhaṅgaṃ                                                           present in him,the monk knows,’ there is the
‘atthi me ajjhattaṃ pītisambojjhaṅgo’ ti                       enlightenment-factor
Pajānati,                                                                               of rapture in me’,
Asantaṃ vā ajjhattaṃ                                                      or when the enlightenment-factor of rapture
Pītisambojjhaṅgaṃ                                                           is absent in him, he knows,’ there is no
Natthi me ajjhattaṃ pītisambojjhaṅgo’ ti                     enlightenment-factor of rapture
Pajānati;                                                                               in me,’
Yathā ca  anuppannassa                                                 He also knows the reason why the arising of
Pītisambojjhaṅgassa uppado                                         the non-arisen enlightenment-factor of
Hoti tañca pajānati;                                                           rapture comes to be;
Yathā ca uppannassa                                                       he also knows the reason why the perfection
Pītisambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanā                                       through cultivation of the enlightenment-
Pāripūri hoti tañca pajānāti.                                            factor Of rapture comes to be.

5 Santaṃ vā ajjhattaṃ                                                     When the enlightenment-factor of tranquility
Passaddhisambojjhaṅgaṃ                                             is present in him, the monk knows, ‘There is
Atthi me ajjhattaṃ                                                             the enlightenment-factor
Passaddhisambojjhaṅgo’ ti pajānāti;                           of tranquility in me’,
Asantaṃ vā ajjhattaṃ                                                      or when the enlightenment-factor of
Passaddhisambojjhaṅgaṃ                                             tranquility is absent in him, he knows, ‘ there
Natthi me ajjhattaṃ                                                           is no enlightenment-factor
Passaddisambojjhaṅgo’ti pajānāti;                               of tranquility in me’.
Yathā ca anuppannassa                                  He also knows the reason why the arising of
Passaddhisambojjhaṅgassa                                          non-arisen enlightenment-factor of
Uppādo hoti tañca pajānāti;                                            enlightenment-factor of tranquility comes to be;
Yathā ca uppannassa                                                       he  also knows the reason why the perfection
Passaddhisambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanā                         through cultivation of the enlightenment-
Pāripūri hoti tañca pajānāti.                                            factor Of tranquility comes to be.

6 Santaṃ vā ajjhattaṃ                                                     When the enlightenment-factor of 
Samādhisambojjhaṅgaṃ                                 concentration is present in him, the monk
Atthi me ajjhattaṃ                                                             knows,’There is the enlightenment-factor
samādhisambojjhaṅgo’ti pajānāti.                                of concentration in me,’
Asantaṃ vā ajjhattaṃ                                                      or when the enlightenment-factor of
Samādhisambojjhaṅgaṃ                                 concentration is absent in him, he knows,
Natthi me ajjhattaṃ                                                           ‘ There is no enlightenment-factor of
samādhisambojjhaṅgo ‘ti pajānati.                               Concentration in me’.
Yathā ca anuppannassa                                                  He also knows the reason why the arising of
Samādhisambojjhaṅgassa                                             the non-arisen enlightenment-factor of
uppādo hoti tañca  pajānāti.                                            Concentration comes to be;
Yathā ca uppannassa                                                       he also knows the reason why the perfection
Samādhisambojjhaṅgassa                                             through cultivation of the arisen
Bhāvanā pāripūri hoti tañca pajānati.                                           enlightenment-Factor of concentration comes to be.

7. Santaṃ vā ajjhattaṃ                                                    When the enlightenment-factor of equanimity
Upekkhāsambojjhaṅgaṃ                                 is present in him, the monk knows, ‘ there is
Atthi me ajjhattaṃ                                                             the enlightenment-factor
upekkhāsambojjhaṅgo’ ti pajanati;                               of equanimity in me’,
asantaṃ vā ajjhattaṃ                                                       or when the enlightenment-factor of
upekkhāsambojjhaṅgaṃ                                 equanimity is absent in him, he knows,’there
natthi me ajjhattaṃ                                                            is no enlightenment-factor
upekkhāsambojjhaṅgo’ti pajānāti;                                of equanimity in me’.
yathā ca anuppannassa                                                   He also knows the reason why the arising of
upekkhāsambojjhaṅgassa                                              the non-arisen enlightenment-factor of
upādo hoti tañca pajānāti;                                               equanimity comes to be;
yathā ca uppannassa                                                       he also knows the reason why the perfection 
upekkhāsambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanā                             through cultivation of the enlightenment-
paripūri hoti tañca pajājāti.                                              factor Of equanimity comes to be.

Iti ajjhattaṃ vā dhammesu                                              Thus he dwells contemplating the mental-
Dhammanupassī viharati,                                               object in the mental-objects internally,
Bahiddhā vā dhammesu                                                  or he dwells cultivating the mental-object in
Dhammanupassī viharati,                                               the mental-objects externally,
Ajjhattabahiddha va dhammesu                                    or he dwells cultivating the mental-object in
Dhammānupassī viharati.                                               the Mental-objects both internally and externally.

Samudayadhammānupassī vā                                      He dwells contemplating the origination
Dhammesu viharati,                                                          factors in  the mental-objects,
Vayadhammānupassī vā                                                 or he dwells contemplating the dissolution
Dhammesu viharati,                                                          fators in the mental-objects,
Samudayavayadhammānupassī vā                             or he dwells contampleting both the
Dhammesu viharati.                                                          origination Dissolution factors in the mental-objects.

Atthi dhammā’ ti vā panassa                                          Or his mindfulness is established as ‘ there
Sati paccupaṭṭhita hoti,                                                    are mental-objects only’
Yāvadeva ñāṇamattāya                                                   to the extent necessary for knowledge and
paTissatimattaya.                                                             Mindfulness.
Anissito ca viharati.                                                          He dwells completely  independent ( not
                                                                                                Depending on craving and wrong view),
Na ca kiñci loke upādiyati.                                              Clinging to nothing in the world.
Evampi kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu                                  Monks, thus indeed, a monk dwells
Dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati                          contemplating the mental-object in the
Sattasu bojjhaṅgesu.                                                        Mental-object of the seven factors of
                                                                                                Enlightenment.
