ธาตุบรรพ : ธาตุมนสิการ Dhātumanasikāpabbaṃ : Reflection on the material Elements.


ธาตุบรรพ : ธาตุมนสิการ Dhātumanasikāpabbaṃ :  Reflection on the material Elements.

Puna ca paraṃ,                                                                             And again,
Bhikkhave bhikkhus                                                   Monks,
Imameva kāyaṃ yathāṭhitaṃ                                                a monk reflects upon this very body,
Yathāpaṇihitaṃ dhātuso                                          just as it is placed or disposed,
Paccavekkhati-                                                                             with regard to its primary elements:
Atthi imasmiṃ kāye pathavīdhātu                     There are in this body, the earth element,
Āpodhātu tejodhātu                                                     Water element, the fire element
vāyodhātū ‘ ti.                                                                                and air elelement
               
Seyyathāpi, Bhikkhave,                                                           Monks,
Dakkho goghātako vā                                                                as a skillful butcher
Goghātakantevāsī vā                                                 or a butcher’s apprentice,
Gāviṃ vadhitvā catumahāpathe                                          having slaughtered a cow
vilaso paṭivibhajitvā                                                    and divided it into portions, were sitting a
nisinno assa.                                                                  the Junction of four highways.
                                                           
Evameva kho,                                                                                Even so, a monk
Bhikkhave, bhikkhu imameva kāyaṃ                               reflects upon this very body
Yathāṭhitaṃ yathāpaṇihitaṃ                                  just as it is placed or disposed,
Dhātuso paccavekkhati –                                          with regard to its primary elements:
Atthi imasmiṃ kāye                                                    There are in this body,
Pathavīdhātu āpodhatu                                                             the earth element, the water element,
Tejodhatu vayodhātū’ ti.                                                        The fire element, and the air element.’

Iti ajjhattaṃ vā                                                                           thus he dwells contemplating the body in the
Kāye kāyanupassī viharati,                                    body internally,
Bahidha vā kāye                                                           or he dwells contemplating the body in the body
kāyānupassī viharati,                                                 externally,
Ajjhattabahiddhā vā                                                    or he dwells contemplating the body in the body
Kāyekāyānupassī viharati.                                     Both  internally and externally.

Samudayadhammānupassī vā                                              Or he dwells contemplating the origination
Kāyasmiṃ viharati,                                                    in the body,
Vayadhammānupassī vā                                          or he dwells contemplating the dissolution
Kāyasmiṃ viharati,                                                     factors in the body.
Samudayavayadhammānupassī vā                   or he dwells contemplating both the
Kayasmiṃ viharati.                                                     origination And dissolution factors in the body.

Atthi kāyo’ ti vā panassa                                                       Or his mindfulness is established as
Satipaccupaṭṭhitā hoti,                                                             There is the body only,’
yāvadeva yāṇamattāya                                                             to extent necessary for knowledge and
paṭssatimattāya.                                                          Mindfulness.
Anissito ca viharati.                                                   He dwells completely independent ( not
                                                                                                Depending on craving and wrong view), 
Na ca kiñci loke upādiyati.                                      Clinging to nothing in the world.

Evampi kho,                                                                    Monks,
Bhikkhave, bhikkhu                                                    thus indeed,  a monk
Kāye kāyānupassī viharati.                                    Dwells contemplating the body in the body.

ธาตุบรรพ จบ   :   Dhatumanasikārapabbaṃ niṭṭhitaṃ.
  นวสีถิกาบรรพ :  ว่าด้วยข้อกำหนดป้าช้า ๙ กอง :                                                     Navaivathikapabbaṃ :Nine cemetery contemplations.


1 Puna ca paraṃ, Bhikkhave,                                                And again, Monks,
Bhikkhu seyyathapi passeyya                                              as if a monk sees a body on day dead,
Sarīraṃ sīvathikaya chaḍḍitaṃ,                                          or two days dead,
Ekāhamataṃ vā dvīhamataṃ vā                                         or three days dead, swollen,blue,
Tihamataṃ vā                                                                                 and festering,
Uddhumātakaṃ vinīlakaṃ                                       discarded in the charnel
Vipubbakajātaṃ.                                                           ground.

So imameva kāyaṃ upasaṃharati –                   he then applies to his own body (this perception)
Ayampi kho kāyo                                                          : ‘Indeed this body too is of the same nature.
Evaṃbhāvī evaṃ-anatīto.It will become like that, and will not go beyond that nature.

Iti ajjhattaṃ vā                                                                               thus he dwells contemplating the body in the
Kāyekāyānupassī viharati,                                     body internally,
Bahiddhā va kāyekāyānupassī viharati,         or he dwells contemplating the body in the
                                                                                                body Externally,
Ajjhattabahiddhā vā                                                    or he dwells contemplating the body in the
Kāyekāyānupassī viharati,                                     body both internally and externally.

Samudayadhammānupassī vā                              He dwells contemplating the origination
Kāyasmiṃ viharati,                                                     factors in the body,
Vayadhammānupassī vā                                          or he dwells contemplating the dissolution
Kāyasmiṃ viharati,                                                     factors in the body,
Samudayavayadhammānupassī vā                   or he dwells contemplating  both the origination
Kāyasmiṃ viharati,                                                     and dissolution factors in the body.

Atthi kāyo ‘ ti vā panassa sati                              or his mindfulness is established as ‘
Paccupaṭṭhitā hoti,                                                      There is the body only,’
Yāvadeva ñāṇamattāya                                                         to the extent necessary for knowledge and
Paṭissatimattāya.                                                        Mindfulness.
Anissito ca viharati.                                                   He dwells completely independent
Na ca kiñci loke upādiyati.                                     (not depending on craving and wrong view),
                                                                                                Clinging nothing in the world.
Evampi kho Bhikkhave,                                                            Monks, thus indeed, a monk dwells
Bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati.                 Contemplating the body in the body.

 2 Puna ca paraṃ, Bhikkhave,                                               And again, monks,
Bhikkhu seyyathāpi passeyya                                              as if a monk sees a body
Sarīraṃ sivatthikāya chaḍḍitaṃ,                                       discarded in the charnel ground,
Kāke hi vā khajjamānaṃ                                          being devoured by crows,
Gijjhehi vā khajjamānaṃ                                          by vultures,
Kulalehi vā khajjamānaṃ                                         by hawks,
Sunakkhehi vā khajjamānaṃ                                                 by dogs,
Siṅgalehi va khajjamānaṃ                                      by jackals,
Vividhehi vā pāṇakajātehi khajjamānaṃ.                       Or eaten up by various kinds of worms;

So imameva kāyaṃ upasaṃharati –                   he then applies
Ayampi kho kāyo                                                          to his own body( this perception)
Evaṃdhammo evaṃbhāvī                                       ‘ Indeed this body too is of the same nature.
Evaṃanatīto ‘ ti.                                                           It will become like that, and will not go beyond that nature.’
Iti ajjhattaṃ vā kāye                                                   “Thus he dwells contemplating the body in Kayānupassī viharati,                                                               the body in the body internally,
Bahiddhā vā kāyekāyānupassī viharati,         or he dwells contemplating the body in the body Externally,

Ajjhattabahiddhā vā                                                    or he dwells contemplating the body in the
Kāyekāyānupassī viharati.                                     body Both internally and externally.
                               
Samudayadhammānupassī vā                                              He dwells contemplating the origination
Kayasmiṃ viharati.                                                     factors in the body.
Vayadhammānupassī vā                                          or he dwells contemplating the dissolution
Kāyasmiṃ viharati,                                                     factors in the body.

Samudayavayadhammānupassī vā                   or he dwells contemplating both the origination
Kāyasmiṃ viharati                                                       and Dissolution factors in the body.

Sati paccupaṭṭhitā hoti,                                                            there is the body only,
Yāvadeva ñāṇamattāya                                                            to the extent necessary for knowledge

Evampi tho, Bhikkhave,                                                           “Monks, thus indeed, a monk dwells
Bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati.                 Contemplating the body in the body.

3. Puna ca paraṃ,                                                         And again, as
Bhikkhave,bhikkhu                                                      if a monk sees
Seyyathapi passeyya sarīraṃ                                              a body, discarded
Sīvathikāya chaḍḍitaṃ,                                                           in the charnel ground,
Aṭṭhikasaṅkhalikaṃ samaṃsalohitaṃ             reduced to a skeleton with some blood adhering To it
                                                                                               
Nahārusambandhaṃ.                                                 Held together with the tendons,
So imameva kāyaṃ upsasaṃharati –                                he then applies to  his own body ( this
perception):
Ayampi kho kāyo evaṃdhammo                                   ‘Indeed this body too is of the same nature.
Evaṃbhāvī evaṃanatīto’ ti.                                            It will become like that. And not go beyond
that nature.
Iti ajjhattaṃ va kāye                                                   Thus he dwells contemplating the body in the
Kāyānupassī viharati,                                                body internally.
Bahiddhā vā kāye                                                         or he dwells contemplating the body in the
kāyānupssī viharati.                                                   body Externally.
Ajjhattabahiddhā vā                                                    or he dwells contemplating the body in the
Kāye kāyānupassī viharati.                                    body both internally and externally.

Kāyasmiṃ viharati.                                                     factors In the body,
Vayadhammānupassī vā                                          or he dwells contemplating the dissolution

Kāyasmiṃ viharati.                                                     origination And dissolution factors in the body.

4. Puna ca paraṃ, bhikkhave,                                              And again,
Bhikkhu seyyathāpi                                                    Monks, ,
passeyya sarīraṃ                                                         as if a monk sees a body
sīvathikāya chaḍḍitaṃ,                                                             discarded in the charnel ground,
aṭṭhikasaṅkhalikaṃ                                                    reduced to a skeleton held together with
nimaṃsalohitamakkhitaṃ                                       the tendons, blood smeared,
nahārusambandhaṃ.                                                  Fleshless:
So immeva kāyaṃ upasaṃharati-                      He then applies to his own body
( this perception):
Ayampi kho kāyo                                                          ‘Indeed this body too is the same nature.
Evaṃdhammo evambhāvī                                       it will become like that,
Evaṃanatīto ‘ ti.                                                                            And will not go beyond that nature.’

Iti ajjhattaṃ vā kāye                                                   Thus he dwells contemplating the body
Kāyānupassī viharati,                                                                in the body internally,
Bahiddha vā kāye                                                         or he dwells contemplating the body in the
Kāyānupassī viharati.                                                                Body externally,
Ajjhattabahiddhā vā                                                    or he dwells contemplating the body in
Kāye kāyānupassī viharati.                                    Body both internally and externally.

Samudayadhammānupassī vā                                              he dwells contemplating the origination
Kāyasmiṃ viharati,                                                     factors in the body,
Vayadhammānupassī vā                                          or he dwells contemplating the
Kāyasmiṃ viharati.                                                     dissolution factors in the body.

Sivathikāya chaḍḍhitaṃ,                                         discarded in the charnel ground,
Aṭṭhikasaṅkhalikaṃ                                                    reduced to a skeleton held together by
Apagatamaṃsalohitam                                                             the tendons, blood smeared,
Nahārusambandhaṃ.                                                  fleshless:
So imameva kāyaṃ upasaṃharati –                  he then applies to his own body(this
perception):
Ayampi kho kāyo evaṃdhammmo                    ‘Indeed this body too is of the same nature.
Evaṃbhāvī evaṃanatito’ti.                                     It will become like that, and will not go beyond
that nature.
Iti ajjhattaṃ vā kāye                                                   Thus he dwells contemplating the body
Kāyānupassī viharati,                                                                in the body internally,
bahiddhā vā                                                                     or he dwells contemplating 
Kāye kāyānupassī viharati,                                    the body in the body externally,
Ajjhattabahiddhā vā                                                    or he dwells contemplating the body in the
Kāye kāyānupassī viharati.                                    body Both internally and externally.

Bhikkhu seyyathāpi passeyya                                              as if a monk sees a body,
Sarīraṃ sivathikāya chaḍḍitaṃ,                                          discarded in the charnel ground,
Aṭṭhikāni apagatasambandhāni                                            reduced to loose bones scattered in all
Disā vidisā vikkhittāni,                                                             direction
1 Aññena  hattaṭṭhikaṃ                                                             1 here bones of the hand,
2 Aññena pādaṭṭhikaṃ                                                               2 there bones of the foot,
3 Aññena jaṅghaṭṭhikaṃ                                                           3 shin bones
4 aññena ūraṭṭhikaṃ                                                    4 thigh bones
5 aññena katiṭṭhikaṃ                                                  5 pelvis bones
6 aññena piṭṭhikaṇaṭkaṭṭhikaṃ                                              6 back bones                                      
7 aññena phāsukaṭṭhikaṃ                                        7 ribs bones
8 aññena uraṭṭhikaṃ                                                    8 sternum bones
9 aññena bāhuṭṭhikaṃ                                                                9 humerus bones
10 aññena aṅsaṭṭhikaṃ                                                              10 scapula bones
11 aññena gīvaṭṭhikaṃ                                                               11 neck bones
12 aññena hanukaṭṭhikaṃ                                        12 jaw bones
13 aññena dantaṭṭhikaṃ                                                         13 teeth bones
14 aññena sīsakatāhaṃ                                                             14 skull bones
So imameva kāyaṃ upasaṃharati –                    he  then applies to his own body( this
Ayampi kho kāyo                                                        perception):’ Indeed this body too
Evamdhammo                                                                 is of the same nature.
Evambhavī                                                                       It will become like that,
Evaṃanatito ‘ ti.                                                                            And will not go beyond that nature.’

Iti ajjhattaṃ vā                                                                               Thus he dwells contemplating the body in the
Kāye kāyānupassī viharati,                                    body internally,
Bahiddhā vā kāye                                                         or he dwells contemplating the body in the
 Kāyānupassī  viharati,                                                             body externally,
Ajjhattabahiddhā vā                                                    or he dwells contemplating the body in the
Kāye kāyānupassī viharati.                                    body Both internally and externally.

Kāyasmiṃ viharati,                                                     factors in the body,
Vayadhammānupassī vā                                          or he dwells contemplating the dissolution
Kāyasmiṃ viharati,                                                     factors in the body,

Kāyasmiṃ viharati.                                                     and Dissolution factors in the body.

Sati paccupaṭṭhitā hoti,                                                            is the body only’
Yāvadeva ñāṇamattāya                                                            to extent necessary for knowledge and
Paṭissatimattāya.                                                        Mindfulness.
Anissito ca viharati.                                                    He dwells contemplating independent(not
Depending on craving and wrong view)
Na ca kiñci loke upādiyati.                                     Clinging to nothing in the world.
Evampi kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu                                        Monk, thus indeed, a monk dwells
Kāye kāyanupassī viharati.                                    contemplating the body in the body.

Puna ca paraṃ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu                             And again,Monks,
Seyyathāpi passeyya sarīraṃ                                              as if a monk sees a body,               
Sivathikāya chaḍḍitaṃ,                                                            discarded in the charnel ground,
Aṭṭhikāni setāni                                                                             reduced to bleached bones of shell -
Saṅkhavaṇṇapatibhāgāni.                                       Like color,
So imameva kāyaṃ upasaṃharati-                    he then applies to his own body(this perception)
Ayampi kho kāyo evaṃdhammo                                        : ‘Indeed this body too is of the same nature.
Evaṃbhavī evaṃanatīto ‘ ti.                                  It will become like that, and will not go
beyond that nature.’
Iti ajjhattaṃ vā kāye                                                   Thus he dwells contemplating the body in the
Kāyānupassī viharati,                                                                body internally,
Bahiddha vā                                                                     or he dwells contemplating the body in the
Kāye kāyānupassī viharati,                                    body externally,

Kāye kāyānupassī viharati.                                    body Both internally and externally.

Kāyasmiṃ viharati,                                                     factors in the body,

Kāyasmiṃ viharati.                                                     origination and dissolution factors in the body.

8. Puna ca paraṃ,                                                        And again,
Bhikkhave, bhikkhu                                                    Monks,
Seyyathapi passeyya sarIraṃ                                              as if a monk sees a body,
Sīvathikāya chaḍḍitaṃ,                                                            discarded in the charnel ground,
Aṭṭhikani  puñjakitāni                                                                 reduced to bones more than a year old,
terovassikāni.                                                                                Lying  in a heap;

So imameva kāyaṃ upasaṃharati-                    he then applies to his own body
( this pereception)
Ayampi kho kayo                                                          ‘ Indeed this body too is
Evaṃdhammo                                                                             the same nature.
Evaṃbhavī evaṃanatto’ ti.                                     It will become like that, and will not go
beyond that nature.
Iti ajjhattaṃ vā kāye                                                   Thus he dwells contemplating the body in the
Kāyānupassī viharati,                                                                body internally,
Bahiddhā vā                                                                        or he dwells contemplating the body in the
Kāye kāyānupassī viharati,                                            body externally,
Ajjhattabahiddhā vā                                                          or he dwells contemplating the body in the
Kāye kāyānupassī viharati.                                            body Both internally and externally.

Kayasmiṃ viharati,                                                           factors in the body,

9. Puna ca paraṃ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu                       And again,
Seyyathāpi passeyya sarīraṃ                                       Monks, as if a monk sees a body,
Sivathikāya chaḍḍitaṃ,                                                   discarded in the charnel ground,
Atthikani puñjakitāni terovassikani,                             reduced to rotted bones crumbling to dust;
So imameva kayaṃ upasaṃharati-                              he then applies to his own body ( this
perception):
Ayampi kho kāyo                                                               ‘Indeed this body too is of  the same nature.
Evaṃdhammo                                                                    It will become like that, and will not go beyond
Evaṃbhavī evaṃanatto’ ti.                                             That nature.

Iti ajjhattaṃ vā kāye                                                          Thus he dwells contemplating the body in the
Kāyānupassī viharati,                                                       body internally.
Bahiddhā vā                                                                        or he dwells contemplating the body in the
Kāye kāyānupassī viharati,                                            body externally,
Ajjhattabahiddhā vā                                                          or he dwells contemplating the body in the
Kāye kāyānupassī viharati.                                            body Both internally and externally.
