1 ปัพพะโตปะมะคาถา : Pabbatopamagāthā : The mountain:
Yathāpi selā vipulā Like
gigantic boulders,
Nabhaṃ āhacca pabbatā, mountains
reaching to the sky,
Samantā anupariyeyyuṃ Moving
in from all sides,
Nippothentā catuddisā, crushing the four directions,
Evaṃ jarā ca maccu ca In the same way, ageing &
death
Adhivattanti pānino Roll
over living beings:
Khattiye braāhmane vesse, Noble
warriors, priests, merchants,
Sudde candāla-pukkuse. Workers,
outcastes, & scavengers.
Na kiñci parivajjeti They
spare nothing,
Sabbaṃ-evābhimaddati They trample everything,
Na tatthatthīnaṃ bhūmi Here elephants can hold no
ground
Na rathānaṃ na pattiyā Nor can chariots or infantry.
Na cāpi manta-yuddhena Nor can
a battle of spells
Sakkā jetuṃ dhanena vā. Or
wealth win out.
Tasmā hi paṇdito poso So a wise person,
Sampassaṃ attham-attano Seeing his
own good,
Buddhe Dhamme ca Saṅghe ca Secures firm conviction
Dhīro saddhaṃ nivesaye. In the
Buddha, Dhamma, &Sangha.
Yo dhammacārī kāyena He who practices the Dhamma
Vācāya uda cetasā In
thought, word, & deed,
Idh’eva naṃ pasaṃsanti receives
praise here on earth
Pecca sagge pamodati. And after death rejoices in
heaven.
