Katamañca, bhikkhave,                                                   And, Monks, what is the Noble Truth of 

dukkhasamudayaṃ ariyasacaṃ?                 The Origin of Suffering?

Yāyaṃ taṇhā ponobbhavikā                                           It is that craving which gives rise to further

rebirth and, bound up with pleasure and lust,

nandirāgasagagatā tatratatrabhinandinī;                    find every afresh delight, now here, now

seyyatīdaṃ kāmataṇhā, bhavataṇha,                         there-to wit, the sensual craving, the craving

vibhavataṇha,                                                                     for existence, and the craving for non-existence.

Sā kho panesā, bhikkhave,                                            And, Monks, where does this craving, 

taṇhā kattha uppajjamānā uppajjati,                             when rising, arise,

kattha nivīsamāna nivīsati?                                            and when setting, settle?

Yaṃ loke piyarūpaṃ sātarūpaṃ,                                  Whatever in the world is the delightful thing,

Etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          a pleasurable things, therein this craving,

Ettha nivīsamānā  nivīsati.                                              When arising, arises and, when settling settles.

Kiñca loke piyarūpaṃ sātarūpaṃ?                               What in the word is a delightful thing, a

2 Sotaṃ loke piyarūpaṃ sātarūpaṃ,                           Ear in the world is the a delightful thing, a

Etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          pleasurable thing; therein the craving, when

Ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               Arising, arises and, when settling, settles.

3 Ghānaṃ loke piyarūpaṃ sātarūpaṃ,                        Nose in the world is a delightful thing, a

Etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppaajjati,                       pleasurable thing; therein this craving, when

Ettha  nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                              Arising, arises and, when settling, settles.

4 Jivhā loke  piyarūpaṃ sātarūpaṃ,                             Tongue in the world is a delightful thing, a

Etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          pleasurable thing; therein this craving, when

Ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               Arising, arises and, settling, settles.

5 Kāyo loke piyarūpaṃ sātarūpaṃ,                              Body in the world is a delightful thing, a

Etthesā  taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                         pleasurable thing, therein this craving, when

Ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               Arising, arises and, when settling, settles.

6 Mano loke piyarūpaṃ sātarūpaṃ,                             Mind in the world is a delightful thing, a

Etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          pleasurable thing; therein this craving, when

Ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               Arsing, arises and, when settling settles.

7 Rūpā loke piyarūpaṃ sātarūpaṃ,                              Visual forms in the world is delightful thing,

Etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          pleasurable thing; therein this craving , when

Ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               Arising, arises and, when settling, settles.

8 Sadhā loke piyarūpaṃ sātarūpaṃ,                            Sounds in the world are delightful things,

Etthesā taṇhā  uppajjamānā uppajjati,                         pleasurable things; therein this craving,

Ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               when Arising, arises and, when settling, settles.

9 Gandhā  loke piyarūpaṃ sātarūpaṃ,                        Smells in the world are delightful things,

Etthesā taṇhā  uppajjamānā uppajjati,                         pleasurable things therein this craving, when

Ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               Arising, arises and, when settleing, settles.

10 Rasā loke piyarūpaṃ sātarūpaṃ,                            Tastes in the world are delightful thing,

Etthesā taṇhā  uppajjamānā uppajjati,                         pleasurable thing; therein this craving, when

Ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               Arising, arises and, when settling, settles.

11 Phoṭṭhabbā piyarūpaṃ sātarūpaṃ,                         Tangible objects in the world are delightful

Etthesā taṇhā  uppajjamānā uppajjati,                         things, pleasurable things; therein this

Ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               craving When arising, arises and, when settling, settles.

12 Dhammā loke piyarūpaṃ sātarūpaṃ,                    Mental-objects in the world are delightful   

Etthesa taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          things, pleasurable things; therein this craving

Ettha nivīsa- mānā nivīsati.                                            When arising, arises and, when settling, settles.

15 Ghanaviññāṇaṃ loke piyarūpaṃ                             Nose-consciousness in the world is a

Sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          delightful thing, a pleasurable thing; therein this craving,

Etthesa taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          when arising, arises and,

Ettha nivīsa-mānā nivīsati,                                             when settling, settles.

16 Jivhāviññāṇaṃ loke piyarūpaṃ,                              tongue-consciousness in the world is a

Sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          delightful thing, a pleasurable thing;

Etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          therein this craving,when arising, arises and,

Ettha nivīsa-mānā nivisati.                                             when settling, settles.

17 Kāyaviññāṇaṃ loke piyarūpaṃ                                Body-consciuousness in the world is a

sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          delightful thing, a pleasurable thing;

etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          therein this craving, when arising, arises

ettha nivīsa-mānā nivīsati.                                              and, when Settling, settles.

18 Manoviññāṇaṃ loke piyarūpaṃ                               Mind-consciuosness in the world  is a

sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          delightful thing, a pleasurable thing; therein

etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          this craving, when arising, arises and, when

ethha nivīsa-mānā nivīsati.                                             Settling, settles.

19 Cakkhusamphasso loke piyarūnaṃ                       Eye-contact in the world is a delightful thing,

sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          a pleasurable thing;

etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          there in this craving, when arising, arises and etthe nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                         When settling, settles.

20 Sotasamphasso loke piyarūpaṃ,                            Ear-contact in the world  is a delightful thing,

Sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          a pleasurable thing;

Etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          therein this craving,When arising, arises and Ethha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                         When settling, settles.

                                               

21 Ghānasamphasso loke piyarūpaṃ                         Nose-contact in the world is a delightful

sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          things,a pleasurable thing;

etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          therein  this craving,when arising, arises

ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               and,When settling, settles.

22 Jivhāsamphasso loke piyarūpaṃ                            Tongue-contact in the world a delightful

Sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          things,a pleasurable thing;

Etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          therein this craving,when arising, arises and,

Ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               When settling, settles.

23 Kāyasamphasso loke piyarūpaṃ                            Body-contact in the world a delightful thing,

Sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          a pleasurable thing;

Etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          therein this craing,when arising, arises and,

Ethha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                              When settling, settles.

24 Manosamphasso loke piya rūpaṃ                          Mind-contact in the world a delightful thing,

Sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          a pleasurable thing;

Etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          therein this craving,when arising, arises and,

Ethha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                              When settling, settles.

25 Cakkhusamphassajā  vedanā loke                         Feeling born of eye-contact in the world is

piyarūpaṃ Sātarūpaṃ.                                                     A delightful thing, a p;easurable thing;

Etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          therein this craving,when arising, arises and,

Ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               When settling, settles.

26  Sotasamphassajā  vedanā loke                              Feeling born of ear-contact in the world is a

piyarūpaṃ Sātarūpaṃ.                                                     Delightful thing, a pleasurable thing; therein

Etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          this craving, when arising, arises and,

Ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               When settling, settles.

27  Ghānasamphassaja vedanā loke                           Feeling born of nos-contact in the world is

piyarūpaṃ Sātarūpaṃ.                                                     A delightful thing, a  pleasurable thing; t

Etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          hereinthis craving, when arising, arises and,

Ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               When settling, settles.

28 Jivhāsamphassajā vedanā  loke                             Feeling born of tongue-contact in the world is

piyarūpaṃ Sātarūpaṃ.                                                     A delightful thing, a pleasurable thing;

Etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          therein this craving, when arising, arises

Ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               and,When settling, settles.

29 Kāyasamphassajā vedanā loke                               Feeling born of body-contact in the world is 

piyarūpaṃ Sātarūpaṃ.                                                     A delightful thing, a pleasurable thing,

Etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          therein this craving, when arising, arises

Ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               and,When settling, settles.

30 Manosamphassajā vedanā loke                              Feeling born of mond-contact in the world is

piyarūpaṃ Sātarūpaṃ.                                                     A delightful thing, a pleasurable thing;

Etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          therein this craving, when arising, arises

Ettha nivīsamāna nivīsati.                                               and,When settleing, settles.

31 Rūpasaññā loke piyarūpaṃ                                       Perception of  visual forms in the world is

sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          a delightful thing, a pleasurable thing, therein

etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          this craving, when arising, arises and ,

ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               When settleing, settles.

32  Saddasaññā  loke piyarūpaṃ                  Perception of sounds in the world is a

sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          delightful thing, a pleasurable things, therein

etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          this craving, when arising, arises and,

ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               When settling, settles.

33  Gandhasaññā  loke piyarūpaṃ                                Perception of smells in the world is a

sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          delightful thing, a pleasurable thing; therein

etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          this craving, when arising, arises and,

ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               When settling, settles.

34  Rasssaññā  loke piyarūpaṃ                                     Perception of tastes in the world is a

sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          delightful thing, a pleasurable thing; therein

etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          this craving, when arising, arises and ,

ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               When settling, settles.

35  Phoṭṭhabbasaññā  loke piyarūpaṃ                         Perception of touches in the world is a 

sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          delightful thing, a pleasurable thing; therein

etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          this craving, when arising, arises and,

ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               When settling, settles.

36  Dhammasaññā  loke piyarūpaṃ                             Perception of mental objects in the world is

sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          a delightful ting, a pleasurable thing; therein

etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          this craving, when arising, arises and,

ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               When settling, settles.

37  Rūpasañcetanā loke piyarūpaṃ                             Volition concernting visual forms in the      

Sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          world is a delightful thing, a pleasurable thing;

45 Gandhataṇhā   loke piyarūpaṃ                 Craving for smells in the world is a delightful

46  Rasataṇhā  loke piyarūpaṃ                                      Craving for tastes in the world is a

Sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          delightful thing, a pleasureable thing; therein

etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          this craving , when arising, arises and,

ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               When settling, settles.

47 Phoṭṭhabbataṇhā  loke piyarūpaṃ                           Craving for touches in the world is a

Sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          delgihtful thing, a pleasurable  thing;

etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          therein the craving,when arising, arises and,

ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               When settling, settles.

48 Dhamma-taṇhā  loke piyarūpaṃ                              Craving for mental-object in the world is a

Sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          delightful thing, a pleasurable thing; therein

etthesā taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati,                          this craving, when arising, arises and,

ettha nivīsamānā nivīsati.                                               When settling, settles.

49 Rūpavitakko  loke piyarūpaṃ                                   The thought for visual forms in the world is

Sātarūpaṃ,                                                                          a delightful thing, a pleasurable thing; therein
