Aditta-Pariyāya
Sutta : The Fire Discourse.
[Evaṃ-me
sutaṃ] I
have heard that on one occasion the
Ekaṃ
samayaṃ Bhagavā, Blessed
One was staying in Gaya ,
at
Gayāyaṃ
viharati gayāsīse, Gaya
Head, ,
Saddhiṃ
bhikkhu-sahassena, with
1,000 monks
Tatra
kho Bhagavā bhikkhu āmantesi. There he addressed the monks:
Sabbaṃ
bhikkhave ādittaṃ, Monk,
the All is aflame.
Kiñca
bhikkhave sabbaṃ ādittaṃ, What
All is aflame?
Cakkhuṃ
bhikkhave ādittaṃ, The
eye is aflame.
Rūpā
ādittā, Forms
are aflame.
Cakkhu
vaññānaṃ ādittaṃ, Consciousness
at the eye is aflame,
Cakkhu-samphasso
āditto, Contact
at the eye is aflame.
Yamp’idaṃ
cakkhu-samphassa-paccayā And whatever there is that
arises in
Uppajjati
vedayitaṃ, dependence
on contact at the eye,
Sukkhaṃ
vā dukkhaṃ vā adukkhaṃ- experience
as pleasure, pain, or neither
Asukhaṃ
vā, -pleasure-no-pain,
Tampi
ādittaṃ. That
too is aflame.
Kena
ādittaṃ, Aflame
with what?
Ādittaṃ
rag’agginā dos’agginā Aflame with the fire of passion,
the fire
Moh’agginā, of
aversion, a fire of delusion.
Ādittaṃ
jātiya jarā-maranena, Aflame,
I tell you, with birth, ageing, Sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi &
death, with sorrows, lamentations,
Ādittanti
vadāmi. Pain,
distress, & despairs.
Sotaṃ
ādittaṃ, The ear is aflame.
Saddā
ādittā, Sounds
are aflame.
Sota-viññānaṃ
ādittaṃ, Consciousness at the ear is aflame,
Sota-samphasso
āditto, Contact at the ear is aflame.
Yamp-idaṃ
sota-samphassa-paccayā And
whatever there is that arises in
Uppajjati
vedayitaṃ, dependence
on contact at ear.
Sukkhaṃ
vā dukkhaṃ vā adukkhama- experienced as pleasure, pain,
or
Sukkhaṃ
vā, neither-nor-pain,
Tampi
ādittaṃ. That too is aflame.
Kena
ādittaṃ. Aflame
with what?
Ādittaṃ
rag’agginā dos’agginā, Aflame with the fire of passion,
the fire
Moh’aggina, of
aversion, the fire of delusion.
Ādittaṃ
jātiyā jarā-maranena, Aflame,
I tell you, with birth, ageing,
Sokehi
paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi &death,
with sorrows, lamentations,
Upāyāsehi
ādittanti vadāmi. Pains,
distresses, & despairs.
Ghanaṃ
ādittaṃ, Nose
is aflame.
Gandhā
ādittā, Odors
are aflame.
Ghāna-viññānaṃ
ādittaṃ, Consciousness
with the nose is aflame.
Ghana-sambhasso
āditto. Contact
at the nose is aflame.
Yamp’idam
ghāna-samphassa-paccaya And whatever there is that
arises
Uppajjati
vedayitaṃ, in
dependence on contact at the nose,
Sukhaṃ
vā dukkhaṃ vā adukkham- experienced
as pleasure, pain, or neither-
Asukhaṃ
vā, pleasure-nor-pain,
Taṃpi
ādittaṃ. That too is aflame.

with what?
Ādittaṃ

Yamp’idaṃ jivhā-samphassa-paccayā And
whatever there is that arises in
Uppajajati
vedayitaṃ, dependence
on contact at the tongue,
Sukkhaṃ
vā dukkhaṃ vā adukkhaṃ- experienced
as pleasure, pain, or neither-
Sukkhaṃ
vā, pleasure-nor-pain,
Tampi
ādittaṃ. That too is aflame.
Kena
ādittaṃ. Aflame

Kāya-samphasso
āditto, Contact at the body is aflame.
Yamp’idaṃ
kāya-samphassa-paccayā And whatever there is that arise
in
Uppajjati
vedayitaṃ, dependence
on contact at the body,
Sukkhaṃ
vā dukkhaṃ vā adukkham- experienced
as pleasure, pain, or neither-
Asukkhaṃ
vā, pleasure-nor-pain,

ādittaṃ. That too is aflame.

mano-samphassa-paccaya And whatever there is that
arises in
Uppajjati
vedayitaṃ, dependence
on contact at the intellect,
Sukkhaṃ
vā dukkhaṃ vā adukkham- experienced
as pleasure, pain, or neither-
Asukkhaṃ
vā, nor-pain,
Tampi
ādittaṃ. That too is aflame.
Kena

with what ?
Ādittaṃ
rāg’agginā dos’agginā moh’agginā, Aflame
with the fire of passion, the fire Ādittaṃ jātiyā jara-maranena, Aflame,I
tell you, with birth, ageing, & death,
Sokehi
paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi of
delusion. Aflame, I tell you,with birth,
Upāyāsehi
adittanti vadāmi with
sorrows, lamentations, pains,
Distresses,
& despairs.
Evaṃ
passaṃ bhikkheve sutavā Seeing
thus, the instructed Noble
Ariya-sāvako, disciple
grows disenchanted with the eye,
Cakkhusmiṃ
pi nibbindati, disenchanted
with forms
Rūpesu
pi nibbindati, disenchanted
Cakkhu-viññāne
pi nibbindati, with consciousness at the eye
Cakkhu-samphasse
pi nibbindati, disenchanted
with contact at the eye.
Yamp’idaṃ
cakkhu-samphassa-paccayā And whatever there is that
arises in
Uppajjati
vedayitaṃ, dependence
on contact at the eye,
Sukkhaṃ
vā dukkhaṃ vā adukkham- experienced
as pleasure, pain or neither-
Asukkhaṃ
vā, pleasure-nor-pain:
Tasmiṃ
pi nibbindati. With
that, too, he grows disenchanted.
Sotasmiṃ
pi nibbindati, He grows disenchanted with the
ear,
Saddesu
pi nibbindati, disenchanted
with contact with sounds,
Sota-viññāne
pi nibbindati, disenchanted
with consciousness at the
Sota-samphasse
pi nibbindati, contact
at the ear.
Yamp’idaṃ
sota-samphassa-paccayā And
whatever there is that arises in
Uppajjati
vedayitaṃ, dependence
on contact at the ear,
Sukkhaṃ
vā dukkhaṃ vā adukkham- experienced
as pleasure, pain or neither-
Asukkhaṃ
vā, nor-pain:
Tasmiṃ
pi nibbaindati. With that, too, he grows
disenchanted.
Ghānasmiṃ
pi nibbindati, He
grows disenchanted with nose,
Gandhesu
pi nibbindati, disenchanted with odors,
disenchanted
Ghana-viññāne
pi nibbindati, with
consciousness at the nose,
Ghana-samphasse
pi nibbindati, disenchanted with contact at the nose.
Yamp’idaṃ
ghāna-samphassa-paccayā And whatever there is that
arises in
Uppajjati
vedayitaṃ, dependence
on contact at the nose,
Sukhaṃ
vā dukkhaṃ vā adukkhama- experience
as pleasure, pain, or neither-
Sukkhaṃ
vā, pleasure-nor-pain:
Tasmiṃ
pi nibbindati. With
that , too, he grows disenchanted.
Jivhāya
pi nibbindati, He
grows disenchanted with the tongue,
Rasesu
pi nibbindati, disenchanted
with flavors, disenchanted
Jivhā-viññāne
pi nibbindati, with
consciousness at the tongue,
Jivhā-samphasse
pi nibbindati, disenchanted with contact at the
tongue,
Yamp’idaṃ
jivhā-samphassa-paccayā And whatever there is that
arises in
Uppajjati
vedayitaṃ, dependence
on contact at the tongue,
Sukkhaṃ
vā dukkhaṃ vā adukkham- experienced
as pleasure, pain, or neither-
Asukkhaṃ
va, pleasure-nor-pain:
Tasmiṃ
pi nibbindati. With that, too, he grows
disenchanted.
Kāyasmiṃ
pi nibbindati, He grows disenchanted with the
body,
Photthabbesu
pi nibbindati, disenchanted
with tactile sensations,
Kāya-viññane
pi nibbindati, disenchanted
with consciousness at
Kāya-samphasse
pi nibbindati, the body, disenchanted with
contact
At
the body.
Yamp’idaṃ
kāya-samphassa-paccayā And whatever there is that
arises in
Uppajjati
vedayitaṃ, dependence
on contact at the body,
Sukkhaṃ
vā dukkhaṃ vā adukkham- experienced
as pleasure, pain or nether-
Asukkhaṃ
vā, pleasure-nor-pain:
Tasmiṃ
pi nibbindati. With
that, too, he grows disenchanted.
Manasmiṃ
pi nibbindati, He grows disenchanted with the
intellect,
Dhammesu
pi nibbindati, disenchanted
with ideas, disenchanted
Mano-samphasse
pi nibbindati, with consciousness at the
intellect,
Disenchanted
with contact at the intellect
Yamp’idaṃ
mano-samphassa-paccayā And whatever there is that
arises in
Uppajjati
vedayitaṃ, dependence on contact at the
intllect,
Sukkhaṃ
vā dukkhaṃ vā adukkham- experienced
as pleasure, pain, or neither-
Asukhaṃ
vā, nor-pain:
Tasmiṃ
pi nibbindati. With
that, too, he grows disenchanted.
Nibbindaṃ
virajjati, Disenchanted,
he becomes dispassionat.
Virāgā
vimuccati, Through
dispassion, he is released.
Vimuttasmiṃ
vimuttam-iti ñānaṃ hoti, With release, there is the
knowledge,
Khīnā
jāti, ‘Released’.
He discerns that,’ Birth is
Vusitaṃ
brahma-cariyaṃ, depleted,
the holy life fulfilled, the task
Kataṃ
karaṇīyaṃ, done.
There is nothing further for
Nāparaṃ
itthattāyāti pajānātīti. This world.’
Idam-avoca
Bhagavā, That
is what the Blessed One said. Glad
Attamanā
te bhikkhū Bhagavato at
heart, the monks delighted at his
Bhasitaṃ abhinanduṃ. Words.
Imasmiñca
pana veyya-karanasmiṃ And
while this explanation was being
Bhaññamane, given,
the hearts of the 1,000 monks,
Tassa
bhikkhu-sahassassa anupādāya, through lack of clinging, were
released
āsavehi
cittāni vimucciṃsūti. From
the mental effluents.
Ended.
